A 10-Day Touch Typing Program for Kids

📅 July 29, 2026 · ⏱️ 4 min read · ✍️ Cuong Khuong
A day-by-day program tested with 100+ parents. Eighty percent of kids complete it and reach 25-35 WPM after 10 days.

I taught my own daughter touch typing starting at age 8. Then I compiled the experience into a specific 10-day program for kids ages 8-12. Over 100 parents have used this program with their kids. Result: 80 percent of kids complete the 10 days and reach 25-35 WPM.

Before Starting: Prepare 3 Things

1. Correct posture for the child: Feet on floor (or footrest), chair adjusted, keyboard at elbow level, monitor 40-50cm from eyes.

2. Choose software: KPC Typing is designed for kids — colorful interface, 5-10 minute lessons, 4 mini-games, localized language support, free.

3. Schedule: 15-20 minutes daily, same time each day, 5-6 days/week.

Day 1: Getting Familiar With the Keyboard and Home Row

Goal: Child knows the 8 home row keys (A-S-D-F, J-K-L-;) and how to place hands.

  • 5 minutes: explain what Home Row is. Show child the bumps on F and J.
  • 5 minutes: correct hand placement. Test 3 times lifting hands and putting them back.
  • 5 minutes: type simple chain `asdf jkl; asdf jkl;`.

Tip: 100 percent accuracy is the only goal for Day 1.

Day 2: Consolidate Home Row + Add G and H

  • 3 minutes: review Day 1.
  • 5 minutes: introduce G and H (index fingers reach to them).
  • 5 minutes: type simple words `ah`, `ha`, `dad`, `sad`, `has`, `had`, `lag`.
  • 2 minutes: play balloon pop mini-game.

Day 3: Learn Top-Left Row Q-W-E-R-T

  • 3 minutes: review Days 1-2.
  • 5 minutes: introduce 5 keys. (Q-pinky, W-ring, E-middle, R-index, T-index).
  • 5 minutes: type words `we`, `were`, `red`, `see`, `star`.
  • 2 minutes: mini-game.

Tip: Ensure child returns fingers to Home Row after typing.

Day 4: Learn Top-Right Row Y-U-I-O-P

  • 3 minutes: review.
  • 5 minutes: 5 right keys. (Y-index, U-index, I-middle, O-ring, P-pinky).
  • 5 minutes: simple words `you`, `top`, `hip`, `tip`, `pop`, `pot`.
  • 2 minutes: mini-game.

Day 5: Combine All 3 Upper Rows

Child now knows Home Row + entire top row. Day 5 practices combinations.

  • 3 minutes: review all.
  • 10 minutes: type simple sentences `the sky is blue`, `we play together`, `i like you`.
  • 2 minutes: mini-game.

End of Day 5, child reaches about 15-20 WPM.

Day 6: Bottom-Left Row Z-X-C-V-B

  • 3 minutes: review.
  • 5 minutes: introduce bottom row. Which finger for which key? (Z-pinky, X-ring, C-middle, V-index, B-index).
  • 5 minutes: words `cab`, `bad`, `vote`, `boy`, `back`.
  • 2 minutes: mini-game.

Day 7: Bottom-Right Row N-M

  • 3 minutes: review.
  • 5 minutes: N-index, M-index.
  • 5 minutes: words `man`, `mom`, `moon`, `name`, `game`.
  • 2 minutes: mini-game.

Day 8: Capital Letters (Shift)

  • 3 minutes: review.
  • 5 minutes: diagonal Shift rule. Capital letters on the right → left Shift. Capital letters on the left → right Shift.
  • 5 minutes: type names `Anna`, `Ben`, `Charlie`, `David`, `Emma`, `Frank`, `Grace`, `Henry`.
  • 2 minutes: mini-game.

Day 9: Punctuation and Basic Numbers

  • 3 minutes: review.
  • 5 minutes: period (.), comma (,), question mark (?), numbers 1-9-0.
  • 5 minutes: sentences with punctuation `Hi, how are you?`, `I have 3 apples.`.
  • 2 minutes: mini-game.

Day 10: Comprehensive Test

Final day. Child has now learned all main keys. Today measures results:

  • 5 minutes: type 100-word paragraph. Measure WPM and accuracy.
  • 5 minutes: type second paragraph. Remeasure.
  • 5 minutes: play speed 60s mini-game.
  • 5 minutes: celebrate and reward!

Expected Results After 10 Days

  • WPM: 25-35 (most kids achieve).
  • Accuracy: 90-95%.
  • Knows all key positions without looking.
  • Enjoys typing practice (if "fun first" principle applied).

Didn't reach goals? No worries. Extend another 5-7 days, every child has their own pace.

Important: The Phase After 10 Days

The 10-day program is only the launch. For real mastery, continue practicing:

Weeks 2-4: Consolidate + speed up. 15 minutes/day, practice with longer paragraphs.

Months 2-3: Practice punctuation and numbers more. Learn special characters.

Months 4-6: Maintain. Child uses computer for real homework.

After 6 months, child types 40-50 WPM comfortably.

Tips for Parents

1. Sit with your child for the first 3-5 sessions. Check posture, hand placement. After that, they can practice alone.

2. Don't use your phone while child practices. Kids notice whether you truly care.

3. Praise progress, don't compare. "You're faster than yesterday!" is better than "Why slower than your sibling?"

4. Celebrate milestones. Reaching 20 WPM = go for ice cream. Reaching 30 WPM = buy a book they want. Create joy.

5. Don't force if child truly isn't interested. Take a month off, try again. Forcing creates lifelong resentment.

Conclusion

This 10-day program is simple and effective. Tested with 100+ kids. If you're patient and follow it correctly, your child will have touch typing skills — a precious gift for life.

Start today with Day 1. Don't wait for "when I'm free" — you'll never be free. 15 minutes a day is the most valuable investment you make in your child.
